In the French battlefield of World War I, an 18-year-old recruit lieutenant (Asa Butterfield) came to the front line with the help of his childhood friend, the now heroic officer Stanhope (Sam). But Stanhope has been changed beyond recognition by the war. He suffers from claustrophobia and is manic and irritable.
