Poland, 1962. Anna is an orphan who grew up in a convent. Before she can take her vows as a nun, she leaves the convent to meet her only remaining relative, Wanda. Wanda tells Anna that she is Jewish. The two women embark on a journey that will not only uncover the tragedy of their families, but also find their true place. They begin to question their previous beliefs and everything they believed in in their lives. Both Anna and Wanda want to continue living, but only one of them can do it.
