The film is adapted from a true story. In the United States in the 1950s, Bernard (Anthony Mackie) and Joe (Samuel Jackson), two black entrepreneurs who were determined to change their destiny since childhood, were shackled by the racial system and faced obstacles in starting their own businesses. As a last resort, they came up with a trick and hired a white man, Matt (Nicholas Hoult), to play the "boss" of their industrial empire, while Bernard and Joe pretended to be the doorman and driver, operating behind the scenes.
