The story takes place in the western plains of the United States in 1882. On that vast land, there lived people called "pioneers". They freely chose the land, worked hard, herded cattle and sheep, and lived and worked in peace and contentment. Charlie (Kevin Costner), Sue (Annette Bening), Moss (Abraham Benrubi) and Spearman (Robert Duvall) were among them. However, with the passage of time and the increase in residents, the vast plains are no longer a territory where they can gallop freely, but the four simple and kind people have not noticed the changes in the situation. In an accident, the bully Baxter (Kim Coates) of the western town teamed up with the sheriff to trick Moss who came to buy supplies and prohibited the "pioneers" from approaching the town again. Until then, Charlie and his party realized that it was time to take up arms and fight for their dignity and freedom.
