Sofia (Alicia Vikander) lost her parents and became an orphan since she was a child. When she grew up, she met Cornelius (Christoph Waltz), a wealthy businessman who was much older than her. Although Cornelius could easily buy everything in the world with money, he regretted that he could not have his own children. So his biggest wish after marrying Sofia was that the latter could bring her a boy who could inherit the family property. Cornelius invited the painter Jane (Dane DeHaan) to paint a portrait for the couple. In the process, Sofia was attracted by Jane's talent and fell deeply in love with him.
