The film revolves around Bill (Damon), an American oil rig operator from Oklahoma. He has to go to Marseille to visit his long-lost daughter (Breslin) who is in prison and insists that she did not commit murder. Faced with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complex legal system, Bill is determined to go all out to save his daughter. In the process, he builds a friendship with a local woman and her little daughter, begins a personal journey of exploration, and gains a greater sense of belonging.
