Plot:
Leida (Olivia Colman) goes to the beach alone for vacation. On the beach, she notices a young mother and daughter and can't take her eyes off them. Their striking relationship and their noisy and unfriendly family members make Leida uneasy, and she remembers the fear, confusion and various hardships when she was a new mother. An unintentional act throws Leida into an inner world that even she feels strange and ominous. There, she sees her past: when she was a young mother, she made an unusual choice and faced a series of consequences. The film is Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut. She adapted Elena Ferrante's novel into the screenplay of the film. The cast of "Daughter of the Dark" also includes Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Mescal and Dagmara Dominczyk.
