The story follows a crime novelist named Charles (Dan Stevens) who is experiencing writer's block and invites an eccentric mystic (Judi Dench) to perform a seance for inspiration, but accidentally summons the ghost of his ex-wife (Leslie Mann), who wants to kill Charles so they can reunite in the afterlife. Ruth (Isla Fisher), his current wife, cannot see the ghost and is worried that her husband has gone completely crazy.
