The play tells the story of Li Kuan, who accidentally killed someone in order to protect his wife. After being released from prison after 17 years, he learned that his ex-wife Ding Jie has been living with her mentally ill mother-in-law and twin children. Li Kuan blames himself and feels inferior, living a "helpless" life all day long. Ding Jie is afraid that Li Kuan will commit crimes again, so she takes him home, hoping to help Li Kuan regain confidence. The family goes through painful confrontations and struggles, and finally walks out of the haze.
