At the beginning of the 17th century, the famous Battle of Sekigahara broke out. The army of Shinmen Musashi (Takuya Kimura), a native of Sakushu who was eager to make a name for himself, was defeated. In order to bring the news of his friend Matahachi Motoda back to his hometown, he risked being regarded as a remnant. As a result, he was captured by the powerful monk Ze'an (Teruyuki Kagawa). When he was dying, he was rescued by Matahachi's fiancée Atsu (Yōko Maki) and fled with the poor woman. Musashi was captured again on the way, but he started to practice as a warrior in prison. Four years later, Ikeda (Takashi Sasano), the lord of Himeji Castle, gave him the name Miyamoto Musashi and allowed him to travel around and hone his martial arts.
