The story is adapted from Jonathan Raymond's novel "Half-Life", which was adapted by Raymond and director Reichardt. It is set in Oregon in the 1820s. A Western cook Cookie (played by John Magaro) came to the Wild West to try his luck and met King Lu (played by Orion Lee), a Chinese immigrant who also came to look for opportunities. The two hit it off and started a business together with a cow.
