Plot:
At 12, Otis is a rising TV star in Hollywood. As his career begins to take off, his ex-circus clown father returns to serve as his guardian. Off the set, Otis lives with his father in a motel on the edge of the city, enduring abuse from his overbearing father. Honey Boy follows two timelines, showing the contentious relationship between a father and son and their attempts to mend their ways over the course of a decade. This is another stunning collaboration between writer/star Shia LaBeouf and director Alma Har'el, depicting a painful yet illuminating portrait of growing up. Shia LaBeouf's script dives deep into Otis's psyche, unearthing the scars and uncomfortable truths of the abuse, while Alma contributes an exciting, personal directorial technique without ever losing sight of the film's heartwarming heart. Two outstanding young actors - Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges - play Otis at two different ages, and their energized performances create a powerful and simple character whose emotions are driven by anger and the desire to forgive - two seemingly contradictory emotions that coexist realistically.
