The film is based on the novel of the same name by Russian-French Jewish writer Irena Nemirovsky, and tells a love story that took place in German-occupied France during World War II. Matthias Schoenaerts plays a German officer who moves into a family in the French countryside and develops feelings for the hostess played by Michelle Williams, but their love is blocked and opposed by the war and their families.
