Adapted from Susan Scarfe Merrill's novel, the film is set in the 1960s and tells the story of a young couple (Lerman and Young) who move in with American Gothic thriller novelist Shirley Jackson (Moss) and her husband (Stuhlbarg), and become embroiled in a psychological thriller that provides material for Jackson's next novel.
